uTorrent's latest update installs a cryptocurrency miner ...

Here's the evidence:

• The purported offending uTorrent build (28913) does not exist in the public domain. It does not appear on any 'old versions' websites (1, 2, 3), and is not mentioned on the uTorrent forums.
  
• The closest available builds to this version are 28910 and 28918. These builds were part of the 3.3 beta, not the 3.4.2 release. They are also over 2 years old. Why would somebody be installing a 2 year old build?
  
• 2 years ago EpicScale did not exist.
  
• Publications have tested the installation and none have had EpicScale installed without being asked: 1, 2, 3, 4.
  
• The forum users reporting the problem in the original thread all appear to be new accounts, having either 1 or very few posts.
  

How much evidence is there that this story is true and not either user error or a malicious fabrication? I haven't been able to find any.

Just a heads up, several software and compromised programs(even willfully hidden) have miners working inside them. A great example of something seeming innocent while it ripped me off is utorrent. the newer versions past 3 seem to have a bitcoin miner. I personally like to help archive and preserve rare interesting things for the people of later years, yet I had my rig running almost non stop as usual and my electricity bill more than tripled. I was shocked. I pinned it down to utorrent and did some research.

I got really curious about this cryptominer thing and started an investigation on my own laptop. The first thing that caught my attention that my client as of today is 3.4.2 (38656). I don't know why this guy thinks that the latest build (as of 05.03.2015) is 28913 - I tried to look it up and found that such a build does not even exist. Reinstalled uTorrent.. payed very close attention to the installation process and all I can say is that it did not install anything unwanted. Before you start accusing me of being a BitTorrent employee, let me just say that's just my personal experience. I'm asking you guys... how many of you actually had that software on you?
In general, I believe it's really scary how a single forum post can trigger a big enough shitstorm to potentially bankrupt companies.
